About Delaware Dahlias

Just like farm-to-table and slow food movements, there is a field-to-vase and slow flower movement in the United States. This movement supports local economies and small businesses by buying local flowers from farmers in your area. That's right, grown not flown! As local flower farmers emerge and establish themselves in Delaware, there is anecdotal evidence for the need to raise consumer awareness of locally grown flowers, educate on the benefits of locally grown specialty cut flowers, and provide information on the seasonal limitations of locally grown flowers with and without season extension tools. As the owners of Spectrum Farm LLC, Chris and Ashley Sylvester have experienced previous interactions with consumers that included requests for locally grown flowers that were out of season. Providing information on the benefits of locally grown flowers in conjunction with the seasonal limitations will help establish appropriate consumer expectations and mitigate discouragement in buying local; a goal that is shared by all Delaware flower farmers.

While there may be seasonal limitations, there are also many benefits for consumers to buy locally grown flowers, including access to more exclusive varieties such as dahlias. When introduced to dahlia cut flowers over other varieties of more prominent specialty cut flowers, there was observed additional interest from consumers which reflected the need to provide information to those seeking cut flowers in Delaware of Delaware grown dahlias!
